The most important insight of modern reading research has been the recognition that phonics instruction may not "take" with yourng readers unless they are aware of the segments of speech represented by the graphemes used to spell words in an alphabetic writing system. L.C. Moats, 2006
What is Phonemic Awareness?
Small units of speech which correspond to letters of the alphabet are called phonemes; thus the awareness that language is composed of these small sounds is phonemic awareness. Just remember: phonemic awareness can be done in the dark because it focuses on the sounds of language only, not the graphemes (a letter which represents a single speech sound).
